Creating Customized Training Programs that Work
As I was doing some research for a new project I’m working on I came across this quote:
“The only thing worse than training an employee and having them leave, is to not train them, and have them stay.”
It may seem a little harsh, but having an employee who understands their strengths and has proper training can help boost sales and company morale and increase employee and customer satisfaction.
Customized Training Programs
At the Towson University Center for Professional Studies one of the most creative and dynamic services we provide is customized training. We have an entire arsenal of training programs that we have developed and delivered for the public, private, and non-profit sectors. However, we never like to repeat or pull our training programs ‘off the shelf.’
When developing a customized training program, it’s important for us to understand our client’s current organizational atmosphere, desired needs and outcomes, and what has been tried in the past. The other extremely important part of our assessment of an organization is to understand the people who make up our “client.” This allows us to develop a training program that is not only effective but also strengthens the team’s skills and meets their goals and mission.
Over the past year, we have developed a number of training programs for the Department of Housing and Community Development. Some were as large as 200 people for the organization and as small as 13 for very particular divisions. Using our strengths to aid us, my team utilized
- different instructors
- multiple training technologies
- assessment tools
One of my favorite pre-training assessment tools is Strength Quest. I recommend it because it empowers each employee with their top five strengths. Strength Quest gets away from the notion of telling people about their weaknesses. Instead, it identifies their strengths. Through a customized training program, we are then able to teach a team how to use each other’s strengths to unite and conquer.
Every team, organization, and department is made up of very different people. This is a vital part of what makes organizations run and this is why we tailor our training programs to fit the needs of each client.
